Positive reinforcement is key

I believe the most important thing a teacher can do in helping children to learn is to use positive reinforcement to create a learning environment.  Positive expectations with clearly defined objectives are essential in the creation of such an environment. Instilling a desire to learn as well as a belief in the child’s ability to do so is necessary in order for them to grow.  Discipline, when necessary, should focus on what a child in doing correctly and capitalizing and encouraging correct behavior.  Sidney W. Bijou said, “Research has shown that the most effective way to reduce problem behavior in children is to strengthen desirable behavior through positive reinforcement rather than trying to weaken undesirable behavior using aversive or negative processes.”  When correction is necessary, focusing on the behavior as opposed to making personal attacks and being direct and neutral is important in discipline.  Giving positive reinforcement when the child behaves correctly cannot be understated.
